The GMP documentary follows a group of Seattle's self-proclaimed "freaks" and their iconic leader Dirty Bunny (aka Dan Garlington), turning unsuspecting places into a surprise masquerade party. The story examines the evolution of GMP via Dan's own growth, with the help of supportive family and friends. At the same time, the film exposes the paradoxical desire of these people to both shock the mainstream public and to invite them to have a bit more fun in their lives. Dan displays his earnest aspiration to create his own version of community, one that will be a model of inclusivity and wild self-creation rather than exclusivity and mind-numbing conformity. Thomas Beck, Brandy Parris, Keri Hadfield, Bebet Caguin, and Phillip Whaley met while studying at the Seattle Film Institute. While working on The Guerrilla Masquerade Party documentary, they founded their own production company. The GMP documentary marks their first collaboration. Over 15 hours of footage was shot between November 2003 and January 2004, and edited down to a 15 minute film. The first public screening of the film took place on Saturday May 8th, and was met with rave reviews from everyone in attendance.
