Some of greatest, most creative costumes ever created were for film -- in particular for Sci-Fi movies. From the shiny white armor of a
Storm Trooper to
Aunty Entity's chain mail dress to every
2-headed creatures in a B-movie - Science Fiction swings open the door of possibilities for costumes and makeup.
And back in the day, you could get a double-dose of wild costumes, bizarre creatures, aliens and post-apocolyptic landscapes at the drive in theater double-feature. Press reels, cartoons, popcorn and jujubes sandwiched between two heaping helpings of pure Science Fiction. While you cuddle up with your date in the safety of your car, scientists create
giant spiders and
half-man/half-monster beasts that terrorize cities.
So at 9pm on Saturday, March 31st join the rest of the GMP gang as WE create half-man/half-monsters and terrorize Seattle during
'SCIENCE-FICTION DOUBLE-FEATURE'
The theme "Science-Fiction Double-Feature" itself is from the
Rocky Horror Picture Show theme song, and many of us think of
Star Wars and
Star Trek when we imagine Science Fiction... but the possibilities are so much more endless. A trip to Seattle's Science Fiction Museum or will remind you of just how many books, movies, and television shows fall into the category of Science-Fiction. And even a quick review of all the films spoofed on Myster Science Theater 3000 will reveal the many films in the genre.
This time, in line with the theme, we'll be hitting two different locations. The first locale we'll invade at 9pm. Then at 11pm we'll start our second feature at a new location. So for those of you who want to do something a little over-the-top this time around... consider a second costume for the second feature. Maybe you'll start out as
Robby the Robot, but turn into
Triffid? Or perhaps you'll begin as
Predator and transform before the second feature into
Barbarella.
And where, you ask, will our menagerie of mutants and monsters, aliens and astronauts be invading? As promised, we've selected two locations in fitting with the 'Double-Feature' theme. And we tried to make them as different from one another as possible - like a B-Movie followed by a Feature.
At 9pm, we'll descend on the corner of 15th Ave and NW Market Street in Historic Ballard, invading our 'B-Movie' - the bar at Denny's. Yes, Denny's. No, seriously, Denny's. It's suprisingly big, freakishly well lit, and a great place for us to meet up, have a drink or two, check out each other's costumes, and get ready for phase 2.
At 11pm, we'll move, en masse, to our second location. Just a few blocks up Market Street and around the corner on Ballard Avenue, the entire horde of us will enter our 'Feature' - the BalMar - a classy joint with pool tables, two floors, & leather seating. (BalMar will be our final destination for the evening, unless anyone has a hankering for Moons over My Hammy and wants to return to Denny's.)
The Ballard Denny's is located at 5501 15th Ave NW, at NW Market St
BalMar is located at 5449 Ballard Ave NW, just off NW Market St
Although we wouldn't dare tell you creative kooks what to drink, might we suggest something with Blue Curacao or Midori to make our drinks a little 'otherworldly', too? Maybe a Blue Hawaiian or a Midori Sour? Maybe bring some dry ice to make them bubble and smoke? (Safely, of course)
