Some of the most beautiful, magical moments
in our lives have been lit by hundreds of glowing points of light.
As a child in Seattle, we witnessed the annual
Torchlight Parade and we had the chance to travel to California to watch the Disney Electric Parade. On long car trips at night
we imagined the headlights and brakelights of all the cars on the freeway to be
huge glowing white and red rivers, and on plane rides we pressed our face to the
window during takeoff and landing to see the millions of tiny dots of light of the
cities. And every Christmas Eve we would drive around looking at all the houses decorated with countless little bulbs.
In college, we skinny-dipped on just the
right night, splashing about in the bay surrounded by microscopic, glowing bioluminescent
algae. We spent the 3rd of July dancing all night with friends at a rave, surrounded
by projections, light shows, and hundreds of glow sticks... Then we spent the 4th
of July laying back on a hillside in Gas Works Park watching fireworks explode over
our heads.
More recently, we've traveled to Burning
Man to watch a towering effigy light up in neon, explode in fireworks, and engulf
itself in flames - joining thousands of people in light-up costumes and on glowing
bicycles as we party in the middle of nowhere. We flew to Costa Rica and found
ourselves in the jungle at dusk, witnessing the magic of fireflies rising from the
grass like tiny green fairies. And we rode a cab into Manhattan at night, seeing
iconic buildings like the Empire State Building and the Chysler Building lit up
against the darkness of the sky.
Thinking back on all this, we decided it's
time... Time to illuminate the streets and bars of Seattle. It's time, to
LIGHTEN UP!
On Saturday, May 20th at 10pm, as darkness falls on the city, we'll pop in the batteries, flick the switches, crack the glow sticks, and converge on the latest hipster hotspot, REDWOOD. Redwood has been described as a "dimly lit watering hole" by the Seattle Weekly, and the Stranger noted that "The lighting, such as it is, comes from old-school Coleman-style lanterns retrofitted for electricity" and mentioned that "Two glowing plastic owls and one unglowing one watch over thebar." Sounds perfect, no?
At around 11:30pm, we'll gather the troops and walk a few blocks up to JAI THAI LOUNGE. By day, Jai Thai is a mild-mannered, well-loved Thai restaurant. By night, it comes to life with DJs, dancing, NO COVER, and (perhaps most importantly), it's hella DARK.
REDWOOD is located at 514 E Howell St, at the corner of E Howell and Belmont.
JAI THAI is located at 235 Broadway E, at the corner of Broadway and Thomas.
This may be our most ambitious costume theme
yet, and might seem daunting at first. But we're always here to help make the seemingly
impossible, possible. And several Guerrillas have already pulled off light-up costumes in the past - starting with Colony's Tap-Light bra at the very first GMP. Here's a list of the battery and chemical generated light
sources we thought of that could be incorporated into costumes:
Flash Lights - Perhaps
the simplest, and something you probably already have around. Imagine a Statue
of Liberty with a glowing, flashlight torch!
Bike Lights - Another
portable light source you may already own. The blinking red ones are particularly
fun, and many have multiple patterns you can choose from. Perhaps you'll have a
blinking, beating heart?
Head Lamps - A lot of
folks have head lamps: those battery powered hands-free flashlights you wear on
your head when hiking at night. These are perfect for that Coal Miner costume you've
been waiting to wear!
Glow Sticks - Available
at nearly every hardware and party store in lots
of colors, these little guys are perfect and many have a hanging loop
already on them.
Glow Bracelets/Necklaces
- You can pick these up at local
costume and party stores (like Champion and Display & Costume Supply),
and can use them in all sorts or creative ways. They tend to be even cheaper in
bulk from online sources like ExtremeGlow.com.
Battery Powered 'Rice' Lights
- Available in lots of colors and styles at floral supply shops and at Display &
Costume Supply, these tiny
strings of Christmas lights run of batteries and can turn YOU into a Xmas
tree for the evening.
Glow-in-the-Dark - The
range of products available now that glow-in-the-dark is amazing. With just a little
charging up under white lights, you'll be set. Check out the entire section decated
to glow-in-the-dark items at Archie
McPhee and these Bright
Hands Glow Gloves. You can even buy glow-in-the-dark makeup and hairspray!
Black Lights - Battery
operated Black Lights can be picked up to become the ideal accessory for
your Crime Scene Investigator ensemble or to illuminate a costume of neon colors.
LED Lights - For the more
electrically gifted among us, maybe you want to wire together some Light Emitting
Diodes into a blinking robot costume, or create some 'Throwies'.
EL Wire - A wonder of
technology, ElectroLuminscent Wire is available for sale online at places like CoolNeon.com, and can
be turned into amazing costumes. It's perfect for that Glowing
Jellyfish hat you always dreamed of, can be used as glowing
trim on any costume, and can even be animated into something as amazing
as THIS!
So Much More! - There
are so many other light up items on the market these days... From LED
Beer Mugs, to Flixx Pins, to Adhesive
Backed Glow Badges, and even Light
Up Pom Poms!. Be sure to check out Enlightened.com, ClubThings.com, ExtremeGlow.com, and CoolNeon.com
for more inspiration!
